    Hearing aid styles

Click the plus symbols below to learn more about the differant styles of hearing aids on the market today.

    BTE and OTE

Behind The Ear (BTE) and Over The Ear (OTE) hearing aids contain their components in a casing which fits at the back of the ear, and direct enhanced sound in to the ear. A plastic tube directs amplified sound into an earmould or custom tip inside the ear canal.

OTE and BTE instruments are very durable hearing devices. They are user-friendly and easy to handle, making them ideal where limited dexterity affects hearing aid use. Some incorporate waterproof design so that you can wear your hearing aid anywhere, giving you improved hearing everywhere you go, no matter what your lifestyle. Other external features with behind-the-ear and over-the-ear fittings include Sweep technology which enables you to sweep and tap your finger on the back of the aid to adjust volume and memory settings.

    RIC

These hearing aids use an in-ear amplifier to direct sound from the shell behind the ear through an acoustic tube and in to the receiver sitting inside the ear. This means that you can benefit from the greater power that comes from a discreet shell fitted over the ear, and also enjoy clear sound which is directed straight in to the ear canal. RIC types can offer you features like waterproof construction, touch-pad memory and volume control, and are also a good choice if manual dexterity is a concern.

The RIC receiver uses a small cap made of soft plastic which fits comfortably in the ear canal and is shaped to allow effective venting for the ear. An Absolute Power RIC means that the receiver is instead housed inside a custom-made ear mould for a secure, comfortable individual fit and for greater sound amplification.

Remarkable new manufacturing processes can create a hearing aid specifically moulded to fit your ear canal for total comfort. Combined with a massive range of available colours, designs and materials, everything from personal taste to possible skin allergies can be catered for.

    ITE

In-the-ear hearing aids house their components in a custom made shell that fills the bowl of the ear. Their size makes them easier to handle than some types, making them ideal for those with limited manual dexterity to change their hearing aid settings and volume level.

ITE types can be fitted for a broad range of hearing losses, and can be custom-made using a mould of your ear to give an exact, comfortable and secure fit.

    ITC

In The Canal hearing aids fit all of their components inside a small shell, which is moulded to the shape of the ear to fit inside the opening of the ear canal. The setting controls and battery drawer face outwards for ease of accessibility, while remaining discreet.

If you have ever struggled with a hearing aid or earplug that didn’t fit your ear properly then you will really notice the difference in comfort with a custom-moulded aid. Fittings like In The Canal use the exact shape of your ear to form a strong seal for efficient performance, and to give a high degree of comfort during use.

    CIC

These hearing aid devices fit completely inside the ear canal. Only the tip of a tiny plastic line shows outside the canal, which is used to insert and remove the instrument.

The hearing aid components are contained in a small shell which is custom-made to the shape of your ear canal, achieved by using a mould of your ear. This gives outstanding comfort and forms a very close seal against your ear for more efficient hearing amplification.

    IIC

Invisible In Canal (IIC) is the smallest type of hearing aid fitting. It sits comfortably deep inside the ear canal and is completely invisible when worn, even up close. This is because the IIC fits past the second bend in the ear canal thanks to revolutionary modelling techniques and the latest microchip technology, making it smaller and more streamlined than any other type of hearing aid.

The world’s first Invisible In Canal hearing aid, the SoundLens, uses advanced software to provide a broad range of patients with superb hearing enhancement. The SoundLens deeper fitting and special venting allows it to collect sound using the natural shape of the ear canal, closely mimicking natural hearing to provide high-quality sound.

Hearing Glasses or Spectacle Hearing Aids

Hearing Glasses or Spectacle Hearing Aids have their components built into the arm of a pair of spectacles, this makes the device discreet and comfortable. Spectacle hearing aids can be attached to a number of different frames, really useful if you have reading or driving glasses of perhaps prescription sun glasses.

Spectacles Hearing Aids can be fitted for a broad range of hearing losses.
